Artificial grass is a doddle when it comes to maintenance in comparison to natural turf. Its low maintenance, low key care is one of the big attractions of artificial grass, apart from the fact it’s so attractive and money saving. However, there are some things you’ll need to do to keep it clean.
Because artificial grass is low on maintenance without the need for chemicals or mowing, it really sells itself as a surface for your garden. Cleaning is important and plays a role in the longevity of your fake grass, but don’t worry about methods because it’s a relatively simple process.
DEBRIS.
As you can imagine, in the winter and autumn months there will be a variety of different debris that lands in your garden. Most of it is natural, things like branches, leaves and twigs, but there’ll also be the odd piece of rubbish from other people’s gardens and blown in from the street if you live near a busy road.
KEEP REMOVING DEBRIS AS YOU FIND IT.
It’s a good idea to simply pick up what you find as you find it throughout the year. Once the poor weather comes to an end you will then have much less to do and you can use a brush to sweep anything else away. The lawn will look better and make the garden far more manageable.
PETS.
If you have pets, then they’re going to be using the back garden, and possibly the front too for their toilet. You could set aside an area that’s covered in soil or gravel for that specifically. However, as you will know a lot of pets will do what they want, so they may go on the artificial grass for pets whether you like it or not. Solids are relatively easy to deal with; all you need to do is pick them up and dispose of in the garbage. Fluids should go down into the grass to the permeable lining below, draining away effectively, however it’s still probably a good idea to rinse the area away with water to give it a little help and to prevent staining.
A SONG OF SNOW AND ICE.
In winter there’s the inevitable snow and ice. Here, there’s not much to do other than wait until it starts to melt away. Never try walking on it when it’s frozen as you could damage the individual fibres permanently. Avoid using heavy duty implements like spades or shovels, you could possibly remove the top, thicker layer and then leave the rest to melt away. Don’t use salt either as this can build up an unpleasant residue and block the effectiveness of the grass to drain away liquids.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SPILL DRINK OR FOOD ON YOUR GRASS?
Well, liquids should drain away easily if you’ve invested in good artificial grass and permeable linings underneath, food solids can be picked up and placed in the recycling bin. You can also use a putty or butter knife that’s blunted to remove stubborn and hard to remove gum or other foods stuffs, ice cubes are also good for this. Never use harsh chemicals to clean your fake grass.
BRUSHING.
For keeping your grass regularly maintained use a broom with stiff bristles to keep it looking its best. You can do this on a regular basis, and it should be enough, apart from the things we’ve suggested above, to keep your grass looking super!
