If you’ve decided to take the plunge and have artificial turf installed what can you expect once it arrives? You may be trying to install it yourself, or possibly the people you bought it from are installing it for you. Whichever method you go with, you’ll want to know what to expect, and we’re here to help. Today, we’ll discuss the ins and out of artificial grass installation, so read on and hopefully we can allay any fears you may have.

REMOVING THE NATURAL GRASS LAWN READY FOR THE NEW ARTIFICIAL TURF.

First and foremost, you’ll have your natural grass removed before your fake grass installation can go ahead. A team of professionals will know what they’re doing and will have been trained in the process. They will remove all the grass in segments as this is a far simpler way of doing it, and then they’ll stack the blocks of grass so they can be taken away later. You could also consider selling your grass segments and making some extra money out of it, and then you could put this towards something else, or even to help with the cost of installation.

Clean the area where you’re going to have grass installed. You can do this by making sure all the pipes and cables can’t be reached so they’re not damaged during the digging stage. Remove any large objects such as stones and debris both before and after the turf has been removed.

BASE OF SAND OR GRANITE DUST.

Either you or the team will create an edge. This is the edging of your synthetic grass lawn. You’ll lay what’s known as a ‘base,’ and this can be either sand or granite dust. This base will then be flattened, it doesn’t have to be completely flat but no lumps or mounds, as this will show through the artificial turf. Then it’s the laying out of some weed membrane, sounds a little strange, but as you’ve probably guessed it’s to prevent weed growth.

BASE, BLADES, EDGING AND BRUSHING.

Once you’ve applied the base you can then roll out your artificial grass on top of it. Trim the grass once you’ve lain it out, making sure all the blades are pointing the right way. You can do this by rolling it out in the same direction. You can use a craft knife which you can get at any DIY store to rid the grass of any edges or borders. You can then secure the edges, or the professional team you’ve hired will. Some firms will use a peg, or a beam to do this. To finish a quick brush with broom with hard bristles will give your synthetic grass a natural look in keeping with the rest of your garden.
